Around one year after swearing herself in as a citizen of the United States of America, Seeme Gull Hasan gave birth, on July 4th of 1980, to an All-American baby boy in Pueblo, Colorado. She named this boy Muhammad Ali Hasan.
Hasan grew up in the steel mill town of Pueblo, Colorado, where he spent most of his days attached to his mother's hip, sitting in on all of her social work activities. It was here where Hasan learned the importance of bettering our communities through volunteering. The Hasan family eventually bought a home in Eagle County when Hasan was 10-years-old and his love for the Western Slope grew with each passing year.
Hasan has a strong history of activism in the Western Slope. In the summer of 2007, despite disagreeing with officials from his own Republican Party, Hasan campaigned against the Roan Plateau plan that would have increased drilling on the plateau, while sending 50% of the royalties to a Higher Education Fund on the Front Range. Through the efforts of Hasan and his team, the plan was eventually abandoned, a victory for the Western Slope!
Hasan campaigned against the Home Rule plan for Eagle County, in the spring of 2007, by writing articles in the Vail Daily. His proudest activism to date is his work on the Teachers Advancement Program of Eagle County Schools. Hasan organized concerned parents and teachers and helped to open a dialogue between the Eagle County School Board and concerned teachers. In the fall of 2007, it was announced that changes would be made to the Teacher Advancement Program, in the interest of benefiting teachers. It was a proud achievement for Hasan, as well as many parents and teachers.
Hasan pursued his college education in Los Angeles, where he graduated from Occidental College. As an Independent Pattern of Study student, Hasan designed his own major that combined education, environmental science, and filmmaking all into one major, which he called Urban & Environmental Filmmaking.
As an education student, he served as a tyro-teacher at Franklin High School of the Los Angeles Unified Public School District, where he taught in an economically-disadvantaged area of Los Angeles. As an environmental scientist, he worked directly with Dr. James Sadd in assisting the development of geographic information systems analysis for the State of California. And as a filmmaker, he created award winning short films.
Hasan attained his Master's in Film Directing degree from Chapman University in the spring of 2007. While at Chapman, Hasan opened his Colorado-based film company, Rabia LLC. In 2006, the Coca-Cola Corporation recognized Hasan as a Refreshing Filmmaker Finalist. In 2007, Panavision designated him as an Emerging Filmmaker. Hasan's latest film, RABIA, is currently traveling the film festival circuit.
